In Academic, Tuesday, September 08, 2015

In History of Architecture II , after introducing Islamic Architecture during the lectures and discussing also Cairo’s rich heritage from this period, an excursion was done to the Citadel, dating back to the time of Salah eld-Din. Part of the excursion was a general introduction about the citadel and then focusing on the Mosque of Mohamed Ali Pasha (1848) and the Mosque of the Mamluk Sultan al-Nasir Mohamed (1318), representing two very different types of mosque architecture. In a task on site the students had to analyze and describe the Nasir Mohamed Mosque according to its design, construction and building materials. There was also time to experience architecture in terms of space and the urban context of the Citadel overlooking the historic center of Cairo.
