A theoretical discourse about space

The exhibition was held on campus in one of the exhibition halls in the D-Building. It represented a visual production of the elective course which was a collaborative Seminar by German University Cairo and HfK Bremen. The course was based on a variation of spatial readings including “Poetics of Space” by Gaston Bachelard, “Over Exposed City” by Paul Virilio, “Production of Space” by Henri Lefebvre and ending up with a focus on Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari’s “The Smooth and the Striated”. Upon this intense list, reflections were made on the existing case study of New Cairo. Research questions as well as rich discussions were raised and later on were manifested in forms of visual production. The final outcomes widely spanned in variation as well as in topic, but all were successfully connected through highlighting New Cairo as spatial phenomena.

The art productions featured an interesting spectrum of visual mediums, between illustration, imagery, still and collage, video work and spatial models. The students had the opportunity to understand and produce abstract visual art away from the mundane architectural production. The whole process was driven by a democratic structure and was published on a blog view here.
