Water Front Housing Hybrid Design Studio VII

Living on the water – In hardly another city of the world, the river is of similar importance for the historic identity and urban live like the Nile for Cairo. Water as a living space, in the form of houseboats or public terraces in the water are so far been limited in the city on a few central zones. Vast urban districts along the Nile are without direct pedestrian access or architectural orientation towards the water. New building typologies along the river banks or directly built on the water combined with public spaces of high quality can connect the city with the Nile and create a special quality for living, expressing an individual lifestyle with a particular way of life with a tense relationship of buildings and water.


The building site directly by the riverbanks of the Nile canal has a big potential for symbiotic and ecologic architectural solutions. Buildings can profit in numerous ways from the adjacent waterfront, for example to naturally heat and cool them, or to connect them to alternative riverboat transportation. Developing the ecologic and sustainable potential of the site is a main design task on this project.


The final building design on this project should meet requirements for sustainable and energy‐efficient buildings. Students will proof the sustainable performance of their building design by preparation of a “Sustainable Evaluation Section”, a “Sustainable Evaluation Table” and development of main construction details.


Buildings with the possibility for great flexibility in usage provide another resource saving new aspect for sustainable cities. With a building structure, allowing the partitioning elements and inside walls to be arranged and re‐arranged, during the entire live cycle, buildings suit changing needs. Working, living, entertaining, all becomes possible within one flexible building type.


Cooperation with the organization MED‐ENEC, a project on “Energy Efficiency in the Construction Sector in the Mediterranean” (http://www.med‐enec.eu) is planned. MED‐ENEC will be partner of this research and design project, providing the student research group with additional know‐how on energy‐efficiency in building construction.
